CAMBRIDGE KARATE CLUB
ENGLISH SHOTOKAN KARATE ASSOCIATION
WELCOME
Cambridge Karate Club is part of ESKA (English Shotokan Karate Association) and started in 1994. We have three dojos at The Leys School, Cottenham, and Bar Hill, run by Masaya Yumeda, Jo Potts, and Russell McAlinden.
English Shotokan Karate Association was formed in June 1979, and is now one of the most senior karate associations in the country.
The original founding members of ESKA read like a “Who’s Who in British Karate” – they were Michael Randall, Michael Nursey, Roger Hall, John Van Weenen, Eddie Witcher, Greg Durant and Harry Jones, many of which have gone on to found other successful associations in their own right.

Cambridge Karate Club was formed in 1994 by Steve Austin Sensei. In 2007 Jeff Rand Sensei took over running the club and has grown it to what it is today, also transitioning us from IASK to ESKA. It was originally located in Comberton and re-located to Cottenham some years later.
We now have three dojos at The Leys School, Cottenham, and Bar Hill. In 2019 we celebrated our 25th anniversary and are looking forward to 30 years in 2024. In 2021 Jeff Rand Sensei decided it was time to “hand over the reins” and Masaya Yumeda Sensei, Jo Potts Sensei, and Russ McAlinden Sensei have taken over responsibility for the running and primary instructing of the club. They have all been active instructors in the club for many years prior and have a combined karate experience of 88 years.
